Why Wi-Fi Struggles in Florida Block Homes, and How to Fix It
Many homes in Central Florida are built with concrete block exterior walls finished in stucco, and many have large lanais, pool areas and detached garages. Those features are great for the climate, but they are hard on Wi-Fi. If your connection is fast next to the router and weak by the pool or in the primary suite, construction is often the reason.
Why the signal drops
Concrete block and stucco absorb and reflect Wi-Fi signals far more than wood framing and drywall.
Outdoor living spaces are on the other side of those walls, so a single router indoors rarely covers the lanai, pool and yard well.
Consumer routers are often placed wherever the internet provider installed them, which is usually a closet or the edge of the house rather than the center.
Today's homes carry dozens of connected devices, from TVs and cameras to thermostats and speakers, all competing for the same signal.
What actually fixes it
Wired access points. The most reliable approach is to run network cable to access points mounted on ceilings throughout the home, with dedicated coverage for outdoor spaces. Systems from partners like Ubiquiti UniFi and Alta Labs are built for this.
Mesh with a wired backbone. Mesh systems such as eero are simple to manage, and they perform best when the units are connected by cable instead of relaying wirelessly through block walls.
Outdoor-rated equipment. Access points made for outdoor use handle Florida heat and humidity and cover the pool, lanai and driveway cameras.
A properly sized router and switch. A capable router, such as those from Island, plus a managed switch keeps everything fast as you add devices.
Building new? Plan the network before the walls close
If you are building or remodeling, the best time to fix Wi-Fi is before drywall. Running cable to planned access point locations, the network closet and every TV and camera position costs far less during construction and gives you a network that will not need workarounds later.
